Cooperation between Fourth and New Bulgarian University
In the autumn, the cooperation between New Bulgarian University and Fourth will enter into its second academic year. Specialists of the company are giving lectures and conducting exercises as part of the University curriculum in the specialties "Informatics" and "information technology". Fourth is a leading international provider of software solutions for the hospitality industry, with offices in the United States, Europe, Australia and Middle East. The company's customers are restaurants and hotel chains such as Hilton, Subway, Legoland, Travelodge, Gordon Ramsay and many others. Fourth's majority shareholders are New York based Insight Venture Partners.
In the new academic year students in their classes will work on practical projects that replicate the real business of Fourth. Lectures on the technology of software production including requirements analysis, architecture and design, ways of working using Agile methods and techniques, development, testing, release and maintenance give students knowledge of the overall life cycle of software products.
As part of the cooperation between the University and the company, Fourth equips and furnishes a computer lab in Building 2 at New Bulgarian University. From the autumn courses from the programs of the Department of Informatics (Bachelor's and Master’s) will be held in the specialised computer lab, with a focus on the development of business applications. Joint seminars of the Department of Informatics and Fourth will take place in the Lab as well.
The first such seminar in Information Security, will be held in September. The seminar will include principles and basic processes and organization of information security activities, technical measures for protection, aspects of information security in the development and maintenance of information systems, etc. Sign up for the seminar has already started. Training costs are covered by the company.
Also, the Fourth IT Lab will be used for training of IT professionals under a special program developed jointly by faculty from the university and experts from Fourth. Graduates will receive a certificate.
In his speech during the opening of the computer lab Christian Berthelsen, Executive Director of Fourth-Bulgaria and CTO of Fourth, outlined the future development of the cooperation. He announced that the company will fund a PhD program at New Bulgarian University in machine learning. Technical developments as a result of the thesis will be implemented by the company into its products.
In turn, The Rector of New Bulgarian University Prof. Bochkov invited Fourth to organize jointly a scientific-practical conference dedicated to artificial intelligence, Big Data and their application in modern life and business.
